Marriage Licenses

To apply for a marriage license, both parties must come to the City Clerk's Office between 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  The license is only valid for marriages performed in the State of New York.

Requirements:

If you were born in the United States...

you need to provide...

...one (1) of the following forms of identification, which MUST be current:

  •  A certified copy of your birth certificate showing parents' names
AND
  • Driver's license with a photo
  • Current passport
  • Non-drivers identification with a photo

If you were not born in the United States...

you need to provide...

...one (1) of the following forms of identification:

  • A certified copy of your birth certificate showing parents' names accompanied by a certified translation (English)

AND
  • Current passport
  • Naturalization Certificate
  • Alien Resident card

If you were previously married, you need to provide proof of divorce (must be certified copy with a raised seal as issued by the court), or a certified copy of a death certificate for each previous spouse. All documents printed in any language other than English, must be accompanied by a certified translation.

A marriage license is issued for a period of 60 days, and must be used within that period. Also there is a 24 hour waiting period, which means that if you apply for your license at 12:00 noon on Friday, you cannot be married until 12:00 noon on Saturday. This regulation cannot be waived without a court order.

The fee of $40 can be paid by cash, money order, bank check or credit card (Visa/MasterCard.) The license will be issued and the couple will bring it to the party performing the marriage. They will execute the license and mail it back to the City Clerk's Office, where a Marriage Certificate will be issued and the marriage will be filed with the State of New York.
