Marriage Licenses
To apply for a marriage license, both parties must come to the City Clerk's Office between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, exclusive of holidays. The license is only valid for marriages performed in the State of New York.

Born in the United States
Provide a certified copy of your birth certificate showing parents' names and one of the following forms of identification, which must be current:
  • Current passport
  • Driver's license with a photo
  • Non-driver's identification with a photo

Born Outside the United States
Provide certified copy of your birth certificate showing parents' names accompanied by a certified translation (English) and one of the following forms of identification:
  • Alien Resident Card
  • Current passport
  • Naturalization Certificate

Previously Married
If you were previously married, you need to provide proof of divorce (must be certified copy with a raised seal as issued by the court), or a certified copy of a death certificate for each previous spouse. All documents printed in any language other than English, must be accompanied by a certified translation.

License Period
A marriage license is issued for a period of 60 days, and must be used within that period. There is also a 24-hour waiting period, which means that if you apply for your license at noon on Friday, you cannot be married until noon on Saturday. This regulation cannot be waived without a court order.

The fee of $40 can be paid by cash, money order, bank check, or credit card (Visa / MasterCard.) The license will be issued and the couple should bring it to the party performing the marriage. They will execute the license and mail it back to the City Clerk's Office, where a marriage certificate will be issued and the marriage will be filed with the State of New York.
