Fair Street, USA
In 1968, Congress expanded the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting discrimination concerning the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, religion, national origin, sex, (and as amended) handicap and family status. This policy is often referred to as the Fair Housing Act, learn more here.
Fair Street, USA is a grant-funded community art display supported by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) designed to promote the protections of the Fair Housing Act and to educate the public on their rights. The first act of fighting discrimination is awareness that it is happening! Each house highlights the unique struggles protected classes face. Using art as a tool to provide the public with lasting knowledge and resources to protect themselves from discrimination in the future. This display will inform you of your right to fair housing choice, the myriad of ways households might be discriminated against, and what can be done to report discrimination.
The City of White Plains is the first to receive this grant - we are proud of the work these amazing artists and community groups have done to bring this project to life. Fair Street, USA was unveiled to the public on June 29th, 2022 at the White Plains Public Library - Library Plaza. The display is now located throughout the Library, you can check them out from now until August 2022.
