Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Update for Residents January 25, 2021

CWP seal

.The data continues to confirm new COVID cases in Westchester County and in White Plains. There are currently an estimated 619  active cases in our City, down 47 from our call last week. Over the last 7 days we averaged approximately 44 new cases per day. Covid hospitalizations countywide as of Saturday were 554 well below the number of hospital beds.

Several COVID-19 variants have emerged and have quickly become a topic of discussion and concern. Even though these variants appear to be more transmissible, wearing a mask, social distancing, and frequently washing or sanitizing your hands continue to be effective safety measures, and remain our best means of preventing the spread of  this virus.

If you needed a reason to double down on your precautions this is it. Keep wearing your masks whenever you are out!

You may notice that the tents outside the Westchester County Center are being taken down, representing a conclusion by the state that those additional hospital beds are not likely to be needed. The 56 hospital units within the County Center remain as overflow space if required. That area is currently being used as a vaccination pod by New York State.

The priorities for vaccine distribution are set by the state, as are the locations where vaccinations will take place. Vaccinations are currently open to healthcare workers, people age 65 and older, first responders, teachers, public transit workers, grocery store workers, and public safety workers but the demand far exceeds the supply. Right now the major factor impeding vaccine distribution is the lack of sufficient vaccine and not the lack of sites within which to perform vaccinations.

The supply of vaccine comes from the federal government and I am hopeful that we will see supply begin to increase over the coming weeks. It is anticipated that Johnson & Johnson will be ready to release efficacy data by the end of the month and will seek emergency use authorization shortly thereafter. Unlike the 2 vaccines that have been approved it would only require one shot and would add significantly to the vaccine supply. The state is working to ensure that the infrastructure is in place to efficiently distribute vaccines when they are received. I urge all eligible residents to continue to check the state website or call the state Hotline to check for new openings.

One more time with feeling, wear your mask!

Our next call is on February 1st. Until then remember we’re standing together by staying apart.
