The City of White Plains and El Centro Hispano will be distributing 100 new pairs of shoes provided by Soles4Souls and DSW on August 23rd at 6:30 p.m. The shoes will be unisex, black and white canvas, and sized for kindergartners to 3rd graders.
Since 2006, the non-profit Soles4Souls has diverted 51 million pounds of shoes and clothing from landfills. Instead, these new or gently worn shoes are collected and distributed around the world by Soles4Souls to create sustainable jobs and provide relief for those living in poverty.
The City began its partnership with Soles4Souls in 2012 and each Earth Day for the past 7 years, White Plains has embarked on a city-wide effort to collect and donate shoes for this organization. By partnering with the school district and other community organizations, White Plains has collected a total of over 40,000 pairs of shoes since 2012. "Through our partnership with Soles4Souls, the City of White Plains has done tremendous work reducing our waste while helping those in need,” said Mayor Tom Roach. “We now have the opportunity to be on both the giving and receiving end of this initiative with a shoe distribution to those in our own community."
“Soles4Souls is honored once again to work with the City of White Plains, NY to give back into their community! This year, they collected over 6,000 pair of shoes to support our mission of wearing out poverty and because of their generosity; we are donating over 100 pair of new shoes to a local organization of their choice, El Centro Hispano,” said Tiffany Turner, Director of Outreach at Souls4Soles. “These shoes will be distributed to children, just in time to have a new pair of shoes for back to school season so that they step into the school year with confidence and dignity!”
