Storm Safety Tips from Con Edison

City of White Plains News Posted on October 10, 2025

Con Ed advises if a power outage occurs, disconnect large appliances, charge devices beforehand, and have flashlights and batteries ready. Never use portable generators indoors or plug them into a wall outlet.

Immediate safety
  • Do not go near downed wires:
Treat all downed wires as if they are live. Do not touch them or anything in contact with them.

  • Stay in your car:
If a power line falls on your car, stay inside until emergency personnel arrive to help you.

  • Report wires:
Immediately report any downed wires to both the police and Con Edison at 1-800-75-CONED.

  • Avoid equipment:
Stay away from any fallen transformers, which are gray metal drums attached to poles and wires.

Power outage preparedness
  • Keep devices charged:
Charge your cellphones and other mobile devices while you still have power.
  • Prepare for outages:
Have flashlights, battery-operated radios, and extra batteries on hand.
  • Disconnect appliances:
Before power is restored, turn off or disconnect major appliances to prevent overloading circuits when the power comes back on.
  • Use generators safely:
Never operate a portable generator indoors, in a garage, or near windows and air vents. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
